interface 004: THE SYSADMIN

THE SYSADMIN:

I think I can see the pattern here.

A puzzle lies before you, all chaos and contradictions. Within your mind, a mechanism begins to turn – sorting, aligning, discarding the impossible. The analytical engine hums to life, mapping each piece into place until an explanation starts to form.

“What we call reality is in fact nothing more than a consistent hallucination.”

Douglas Hofstadter, Gödel, Escher, Bach.

You learned early that nothing operates accidentally. We may not always immediately produce the logical explanation for an event or circumstance, but it will exist somewhere among the speculation.

Logic is necessary when sentiment becomes insufficient. SYSadmin, or System Admin, is the primary permission holder for access to and organisation of files and data.

It analyses institutions, platforms, markets, galleries, algorithms. Not to justify them, but to understand how they metabolise people, images, dissent.

You recognise patterns where others might see chaos. Trace funding structures behind aesthetics [informed by the cognitive mapping work of Mark Lombardi] interfaces behind ideology. Logic understands neutrality as a performance. You can can also do some maths.

It can be cold, but necessary. Without it, empathy collapses into naivety. With too much of it, everything becomes mechanical.

Go ahead, ask a maths question.

THE BIT: Okay Carol Vorderman, what is x if 3(2x − 5) + 4x² = 2(x + 7) + x²
